Year 11 English Masterclass at the University of Birmingham

12th March 2026

13 of our Year 11 students were selected to attend an exciting linguistics masterclass led by two leading academics focused on how writers use language. All students engaged superbly with the activities, sharing ideas about patterns within fiction and non fiction texts and learning some new linguistic terminology along the way including deixis and collocation!  We also enjoyed a campus tour with an undergraduate which allowed them all to experience an insight into the campus and student life. We hope this opportunity will inspire them as they prepare for their GCSE examinations and beyond as they consider their next steps. Well done to all!

Students shared their insights on the experience below:

I enjoyed the tour and seeing the different opportunities and the campus. It inspired me to want to come to uni and the lectures are very detailed and interesting.

It was a good way to learn new skills and techniques and it was useful to see what could be part of my future education.

I enjoyed exploring the range of spaces for learning and architecture.

I loved the tour of the campus and exploring the different things it had to offer.

I thought seeing the campus was the best part but also thought the learning of English helped further understand language.

I loved the tour of the campus and learning some superstitions about the place and a little taste in a masterclass.

I have enjoyed the masterclass because it’s helped me with my education of the English language .

We enjoyed looking at the campus and seeing what university life is like.

We think the English lecture will really help with our English language.
