Percy Jackson

11th March 2026

It’s not every day that Greek mythology and modern choreography collide, but our Year 9 dancers and the Boys Breakdance crew recently did exactly that. Last week, our talented performers headed to the Birmingham Hippodrome for an electrifying matinee of The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical.

The energy in the theatre was high as our students watched the epic quest of Percy and his friends come to life through high-octane music and inventive movement. For our dancers, it was a masterclass in how storytelling can be told through every jump, slide, and rhythmic sequence.

The excitement didn’t end when the curtain fell. The next day, the studio felt less like a school gym and more like a Broadway rehearsal space. We were thrilled to welcome a member of the professional cast to lead an exclusive workshop for our students.

Our Year 9s and Breakdancers were put through their paces as they learned two original routines straight from the show. It was a fantastic opportunity to see:

  • Professional Precision: Students learned the importance of "hitting the counts" and maintaining energy throughout a full number.

  • Genre Blending: Our breakdancers particularly enjoyed seeing how power moves and street styles are integrated into contemporary musical theatre.

  • Behind-the-Scenes Insights: Between rehearsals, the students took part in a Q&A session, picking up tips on everything from audition nerves to the physical demands of a touring show.

Student Spotlight

"Actually learning the dances we saw on stage was incredible. It’s one thing to watch it, but feeling the speed of the choreography yourself makes you realize how hard those performers work!" — Year 9 Dance Student

The department is incredibly proud of the focus and athleticism shown by all students involved. It’s safe to say the "lightning" has definitely struck our dance studio!
