Chess Challenge: Former Headteacher Takes on Students!

16th January 2025

Yesterday, our school was buzzing with excitement as a special guest visited our Chess Club: Mr Keith Sorrell, former Headteacher of Windsor High School and Sixth Form and former CEO of Windsor Academy Trust.

Mr Sorrell, a renowned chess enthusiast, spent a couple of hours playing simultaneous chess matches against 13 students from all year groups, including our Sixth Form. The atmosphere was electric as students of varying skill levels faced off against this experienced opponent.

The games were fiercely contested, with both sides demonstrating impressive strategic thinking and tactical prowess. While Mr Sorrell certainly showcased his expertise, our students put up a valiant fight, resulting in a closely contested match with wins and losses evenly distributed.

The highlight of the afternoon came when a talented Year 11 student achieved a remarkable victory, checkmating Mr Sorrell in a display of exceptional skill and strategic acumen.

Mr Sorrell said:

I was very pleased to be invited to play matches against the Windsor Chess Club. It was very enjoyable with some tough contests and I am delighted to see so many enthusiastic and talented students playing the game. Chess is clearly thriving at Windsor!”

This unique experience provided our students with an invaluable opportunity to hone their chess skills while also gaining valuable insights from a respected educational leader. Mr Sorrell's visit served as a reminder of the importance of intellectual pursuits and the power of friendly competition.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Mr Sorrell for taking the time to visit our school and share his passion for chess with our students. This memorable event will undoubtedly inspire many to continue developing their chess skills and pursue intellectual challenges with enthusiasm.
